It has been 8 days since I left my lovely Seattle and came to the small town west of Philadelphia in which my Father resides. In doing so, I have voluntarily deprived myself of many things;
Starbucks: There is not a single Starbucks (or similar independent coffee shop) within the towns limits.
WiFi: This has limited my ability to connect to the internet to do the things I take for granted daily in my home life such as email, facebook, CNN.com, etc. Connecting to some of the people that I wanted to physically connect with while on my trip has been next to impossible due to this infringement on my normal communication means.
Bicycles: Unless you go into Philadelphia, there are literally NO bicyclists on the roads (unless you count the occasional middle school student running around). In Seattle and the surrounding areas, you see a bicyclist everyday, several times a day.
Finding appropriate food for myself and my young daughter has also been a challenge. Organic is a dirty word, as is the thought of bringing ones own bags into stores to prevent the use of plastic or paper. Fresh fruit isn't in my (meaning non-nuclear) Families dietary norm. Which for my daughter and I is quite a shock. Fast food, starches at dinner and dessert everyday is the norm.
For me, this has been quite a lesson. And a realization that after living on the West Coast for 4 years, I will never be the same. Having already not "fit in" on the majority of the East Coast, I'm finding myself further and further away from the "norm" on the coast I used to call home.
