Well, part of it is you're a good mom. As you note, they aren't parents--yet. For many people, it's like a marriage. All this fuss and thought goes into the wedding, but none into the actual marriage. When a crisis hits, they're not prepared.
As few people really can be prepared for parenthood, it's possible your friends will rise to the occasion. I hope so. But in many cases, I've seen expectant parents focusing on a checklist rather than a growth list.
