I like it RAW baby, yeah!!!

When most people hear the word RAW, what is that first thing that pops into their minds? Uncooked meat? Unprotected sex? World Wrestling Entertainment specials?

For us, it's the uncooked meat. Specifically, for my dogs.

Now, I could go on and on and on about the benefits of feeding a RAW diet (what was once called a BARF - Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods diet) to your dogs. I could get on my little soap box and tell you of the evils of grains and unnecessary animal byproducts that make the composite of the majority of low-end dogs foods. The crap that most American's tend to feed to their dogs. I could also tell you how, if you can't do RAW, you should at least do a Grain-Free diet. And I agree with all those things. I've seen the proof for myself.

However......

I am a RAW failure. I have NO room to judge anyone on how they choose to feed their dogs. I would be a complete hypocrite if I did so at this point. Why? Well... after MONTHS of feeding RAW, I was having very little success with it. Both dogs were underweight, despite upping their intake to double the recommended amounts. And so, with a heavy heart, I decided to try giving them a small amount of kibble. After much debate, I decided to go with something I thought I never would - a CRAP food :( This is stuff that, while you can't necessarily get a grocery store (which are the worst of the worst and don't get me started on the crap you get at WalMart!), it is one you can get at any chain pet supply store. It's also the brand and type (although a different protein) that the Greyhound Rescue I work with feeds the Foster dogs that come through.

And sadly, it's worked. Both dogs, within days, have put on weight. They both look healthy, instead of sickly, which is not how they're supposed to look on a RAW diet. Most RAW diet fed dogs look FANTASTIC. Unfortunately, I have two of the weirdest dogs on the planet. The heavy protein-rich high end food didn't sit well with Big Dog, and it used to be that Little Dog couldn't do anything but Grain Free. And here they both are, doing fantastic with CRAP food :(

Now to drown my sorrows in wine....
