Yet again there have been some MAJOR ups and downs over the last 48 hours. Shocker!
At one point, my trip looked like it was going to take me to Paris instead of my original destination. At which point, it got me thinking; IS International Travel truly as expensive and unobtainable as I have been led to believe all my life? Sure, I know of College Kids who backpack through Europe and are most definitely not from rich families. But for some reason, I always felt that to truly travel through Europe would be costly.
Hmm... Not so much. I stand corrected.
Okay, sure, the cost of flight alone can set some people's hearts a flutter. It certainly has mine. However, round trip tickets cost the SAME as flying to see my family on the East Coast has the last two years. Hmm... and no one ever said I needed to stay at a five-star hotel, right? Did you know that you can stay in a private suite (the equivalent of a hotel room, basically) in a Hostel, currently for somewhere between $250-$500 for a 6 night stay? And it's cheaper if you're willing to share a dorm-style room. Granted, you might encounter a few creeps and you are more intelligent if you lock up your luggage into a storage locker (most Hostels provide those), but still. That's cheaper then I was expecting.
So my next plan of action? Who needs matching furniture in every room of your house if you can travel the world? I've already asked my Darling Husband to meet me in Paris ;-)

Yes! I always thought it was super expensive too...I spent two weeks in Turkey for under $2k. Half of that was my plane tickets...the rest was hostels/hotels (I actually only stayed in hostels twice), admission to things, food, travel (I bused between cities a lot, and even had a few plane flights within Turkey). Flights are usually your biggest cost...but once you're there, there's so many ways to make it worth it!
We totally want to go this Spring, after he gets back. We were talking about going to Victoria, B.C., but now I'm like "hmm... how about Paris instead?" I'm stoked. I'm thinking, hey, if we can do this, maybe every 2 years we should take an international trip. Next time, Ireland? Scotland? Italy? Who knows!
Go for it! :)
